2018 reading list (so far)

These are the books I finished so far. I will add notes to each books. The list is growing, so check back from time to time if you are interested.

- Reviving America: How Repealing Obamacare, Replacing the Tax Code and Reforming The Fed will Restore Hope and Prosperity
There are some really good points, like high demand in health care is a good thing, or money should be the yard stick of measuring value. However, the method to solve those problems doesn't seem correct.
Also, it mentioned LASIC and plastic surgery becomes cheaper because of high demand and no insurance coverage. The same effect should happen for dental implant too, but it didn't. So the theory must be incomplete.

- The fermata by Nicholson Baker
I was hoping to find sexual intimacy in the beautiful words of a renowned writer. It falls slightly short though. the first 1/3 of the book was fun and witty, especially when he talk about supervision that can see through clothes, but the rest became repetitive. I had hard time submerging in the second half of the story.

- Wired for Story: The Writer's Guide to Using Brain Science to Hook Readers from the Very First Sentence
The protagonist, what is her purpose/ what is her challenge/ how did she handles the challenge and how did the events change her.

- Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain by David Eagleman
consciousness arise from the need to resolve conflicting neural signals. In most cases, subroutines burnt on the circuitry take care of the responses. summoning consciousness requires lots of energy, thus people tend not to lie.

Free will is not free if a choice is inevitable. I'd argue that free will is a relative term that more resourceful people can produce more choices, thus freer will exists.

- The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
Habits consist of 3 parts; cue, routine and rewards. I re-read this book after years of extensive reading on human behavior, hoping to get some new insights. The reading is still enjoyable. However, this time, several stories (especially the ones about key stone habits on corporation) sounds overly simplified.

- The Everything Self-Hypnosis Book
self hypnosis works better if you can tell if you're an analytic personality or a sensual personality, the introduction works differently. For analytic personality, a number workout numb the conscious mind faster. For a sensual personality, imagination works better.

- A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership
A flawed messenger cannot be the right messenger.  A habitual liar cannot tell differences between truth from imagination.

- Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World – and Why Things Are Better Than You Think
...Knowing the world from the press is like getting to know me through a picture of my foot. It's the ugliest part of my body..

- Dollars and Sense
"...Money works the same way. It isn’t the final goal in life, it’s a means to an end. But because money is much more tangible than happiness, well-being, and purpose, we tend to focus our decision-making on money instead of on our ultimate, more meaningful goals"

- Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking
This book didn't really expand what I already know, but I still managed to finish it. I guess letting Siri read fast allow me to read something that I would've quit.. :) The book is too binary and too general that labels introvert and extrovert.

- Payoff - The hidden Logic That Shapes Our Motivations, by Dan Ariely

- Steal Like An Artist, by Austin Kleon.

- How to Hypnotize Anyone - Confessions of A Rogue Hypnotist

- Pre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade, by Robert Cialdini

- Girl Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Success, Sanity, and Happiness for the Female Entrepreneur, by Alwill Leyba Cara
